Just as there are specialists in medicine, there are specialists in dentistry. Orthodontists are dental specialists who dedicate their professional lives to correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. Orthodontists diagnose, treat and prevent dental and facial irregularities. They are uniquely trained to straighten teeth and align jaws.
Orthodontists are dentists. It is important to realize not all dentists are orthodontists. An orthodontist continues their education in a post-doctoral orthodontic residency program accredited by the American Dental Association after the completion of dental school. That specialized training lasts an additional two to three years.
